Birthmark removal

A birthmark is a coloured mark that is often present at birth (or develops soon afterwards) and is visible on the skin. There are two main types of birthmark:

  • Vascular birthmarks (often red, purple or pink) which most commonly occur on the face and in the head and neck area.
  • Pigmented birthmarks (usually brown) can appear anywhere on the body.

Birthmarks can be caused by a variety of different issues, including the abnormal grouping of blood vessels or clusters of pigment cells.

If a birthmark is causing you to have low self esteem, then birthmark removal is possible. Birthmark removal treatment can take as little as 10 minutes.

Laser therapy involves the use of an intense but gentle light beam on birthmarks without causing damage to the surrounding tissue. It may sound severe to have a birthmark removed with a laser, but it is actually an advanced and predictable treatment.

In this procedure, we will use a laser with a light wave chosen for the particular colour of the birthmark to disintegrate the mark until it fades away. This disintegration will occur over the course of several treatments and does not cause any scarring.

It is crucial to avoid sunbathing and tanning beds throughout the entire course of laser treatments. A minimum of four weeks must have passed since your last sunbathing or tanning bed session. This rule also applies to any tanning creams, medications, or injections. Prior to your first session, we will schedule free consultation during which a patch test will be conducted. Please arrive at your consultation without makeup or fragrance

Patients may experience a mild stinging sensation, similar to a mild sunburn, in the treated region. This sensation typically resolves within four to six hours

The number of sessions required for birthmark removal may vary depending on the size and type of the birthmark. This will be discussed during the consultation appointment. Typically, a 90% removal rate can be expected.

Moist cloths or cool packs may be applied to reduce the feeling. Mild inflammation in the treated site typically goes away after several days. The feeling is more benign after every day goes by. Avoid the use of lotion, makeup, deodorant, perfume, or any potential irritants to the treated site for either 24 hours or until all signs of stinging and redness have resolved.
